Lorenzo Lane
THE PROJECT
This screened porch had become a space the family passed through rather than used. A low flat ceiling kept it dark and closed in, and the room sat unused for much of the year.
The transformation centered on the ceiling. We vaulted the space and clad it in engineered wood, then added skylights with automatic venting and mechanical shades to control light and air. LED tape lighting built into the crown gives the room a soft glow after dark. New windows and an exterior door replaced the original screening, and a separate heating and cooling unit means the room is comfortable in every season.
The vaulted ceiling presented a practical challenge, as the depth available was too shallow for traditional fiberglass insulation. Closed cell foam solved it without compromising the ceiling height that makes the room feel open. What began as a porch is now a sunroom the client uses daily, most often for reading.
